Weekend Recap and Affordable Fashion

Confession: I lost completely lost my shit a few days ago. A proper lady would say I had a conniption fit, but I’m gonna call it what it was-losing my shit. Friday morning I had found us a house to rent and then we got a major curveball in the selling of our house. I may or may not have told my husband, ” I can’t. I can’t handle this. Let’s just take the house off the market and live here until it’s time for the nursing home. Actually, send me to the assisted living right now. Those apartments are pretty nice.” It had been a week of setbacks and I wasn’t having it. I’m not exactly the most patient person. I’m the worst.

Since I was feeling stuck, I decided to get out of town for the day on Saturday. I went to my sister’s house for the day. She lives in the Okoboji area which is only about 30-40 minutes away. Okoboji is the best place to be in the summer. Well, I suppose there are some other cool places but it’s the best in Iowa in the summer. I’m pretty jealous of her living there this time of year. We hung out, took an hour walk on the nature trail, went to the Okoboji Store for lunch, and then to Walmart. Maybe that doesn’t sound horribly exciting but it was exactly what I needed to get my head straight. I mentioned the Okoboji Store in my last week’s post and it was just as good this week. I had a the best Bloody Mary I’ve ever had. I’ve always held this little bar in Mankato, Minnesota as having the best Bloody Mary but Okoboji Store just took first prize. Kristi (my sister) and I sat out on their patio for about an hour eating and watching boats go by. We saw 2 of her kids go by on the boat with their dad. Perfect day to be out on the water!

After I got home, we made supper and 2 of my stepkids were at our house so I got to talk to both of them for awhile. The oldest was home from college for the weekend. She’s taking summer classes this year and working too. We don’t get to see her too often so it was nice to talk to her instead of text her.  Then James and I took a Harley ride and stopped at my dad’s house for awhile. Sibley was having their annual Good Ol’ Summertime Days and they had the Party at the Pit last night. The Party at the Pit is at the local country club and the Judd Hoos band played. I’ve seen them a few times before and they are really good. We weren’t planning on going but at about 9:30, we decided to go for a little bit. And we ended up coming home well after we’d planned! The Class of 1998 (not my class) was having their 20 year reunion so I got to see a lot of people I hadn’t seen in years. We’d planned on staying for an hour or two and ended up talking to so many people and having so much fun. It reminded me that I need to get out  instead of worrying about spending money and staying home all the time.

I have to say though, as I get older, alcohol really messes with me. Whenever I have a drink, I can’t sleep. I fall asleep, then wake up and don’t sleep. This is why I rarely have more than 2 drinks! So of course, I couldn’t sleep in today like I’d wanted to and then felt lazy. I binge watched a lot of Friends. And cleaned the house since we have some showings this week. Oh and laundry….it’s never ending.

So, if you’ve read any of my other posts, you know I love affordable fashion. The past few years Walmart has been stepping up their game. I’ve gotten several cute shirts there and always get compliments on them. And their jewelry is awesome! I got 2 pairs of earrings yesterday and they were $6 for both. I wore the rose gold teardrops out last night since they matched my shirt. I got a few compliments on my outfit too, but of course, I didn’t get any pics of me actually wearing it. I’d source it, but none are available online anymore. The jeans are American Eagle Boho Artist Flare and the shirt is from Charming Charlie. Both were purchased at least a year ago. I have seen the jeans on Poshmark a few times.  The shirt is a cold shouldered top with long sleeves. The material is linen so it’s nice and lightweight for the summer. The lighting in my house is complete crap, but the top is off white with turquoise and brown stitching. Also, I polished did my own manicure and pedicure on Friday night. I couldn’t get a good pic but I used the color Don’t Bossa Nova me Around by OPI. This is my favorite nail color. It’s a great nude -especially for fair skinned people.

I just checked Instagram and saw one of my college classmates is in Anna Maria Island and posted a picture at the Ugly Grouper. I am insanely jealous of her now too. I can’t wait to go back there for our next vacation. Next weekend, we’re heading to Duluth, MN so James can run Grandma’s Marathon. I’ve never been to Duluth so I’m looking forward to it. Everyone keeps telling me how beautiful it is. Since it’s so far north, it probably won’t be as hot as it’s been here. The only downfall is the 7 hours drive there and the fact that none of our friends are running this race so I’ll be stuck alone for about 5 hours while he is running. Hoping I can find him at a few spots along the course. And maybe I’ll bring a good book to read. Oh speaking of books, I’ve read 2 lately that I’ve really liked. I read My Story by Elizabeth SmartRemember her? She was kidnapped and rescued 9 months later. Reading what she went through made me sick to my stomach but her outlook is incredible. She’s now an activist for missing children and is married with a daughter. I’d love to hear her speak sometime. The other book I read is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. My friend recommended it to me and it was also really good!

I also saw on social media that my cousin and his wife just got a new puppy and some goats. I invited myself over there this week to see them! I’m hoping for some sort of good news this week. One of my friends is pregnant and her due date is soon so every time I see her text, I think she’s had her baby! I can’t imagine how anxious she is right now.

I really need to get to bed. Lack of sleep last night is going to make 5:00 AM come pretty darn quick. I’ve been getting so much better at working out in the morning! James and I have been waking up early and lifting weights 3 days a week. So much easier when it’s light out…Ok, thanks for reading and go make it a great week!

  1. I bought Elizabeth Smart’s book, very good. Wow, the horrible things she endured and faith and strength carried her through. I remember when this happened…… Lord time goes so fast! She is very scarred but is enduring by the grace of God.
