My Exciting 4th of July

Happy 4th of July! What am I doing to celebrate America’s birthday? A whole lot of nothing. Actually, I’m cleaning the house. We have yet another showing tomorrow so I better work on this…I kind of like this day off in the middle of the week. I think we should do this more often. I used to love the 4th of July but it’s just not as much fun anymore. I have a lot of opinions…most of which apparently offend people. For example, if you’re going to tell me that I need to stand up and remove my hat for the national anthem and show respect to the flag, I get it. But then don’t parade around in stars and stripes short shorts. If the founding fathers wanted me to show respect to the flag, they sure as shit don’t want it on your ass. Also, on a social media post, someone was bragging about their “All American Food Picnic” today. It included tacos. Tacos are Mexican y’all. Although they are delicious and should be included in more meals.

Speaking of tacos, I went to Taco Hangover in Urbandale last weekend on our Des Moines trip. My husband came with me this time!  The food was awesome but the service….not so much. They mixed up everyone’s order and it took forever. Plus, it was hot as hell. Luckily, the drinks were cold and the company was pretty awesome. I really have the best friends. We went to my friend Ann’s house when we arrived and she gave me a late wedding gift. Like, 9 years late. Ann crotchets and she made us a beautiful afghan. It’s pink, green, and brown and it’s super soft. I love it for so many reasons but mostly that she made it for us. The next night we stayed at my friend Tiffany’s house because she and her husband had a party. So. Much. Fun. Tiff and Luke (her husband) are both great cooks so I stuffed my face too.

During the drive, I read a new book since Emily Giffin just released her latest All We Ever Wanted. I like anything by this author and this book was no exception. Although, I do have to say, the ending was a little abrupt. It’s still worth the read so go get it.

Last night my husband and I watched Trevor Noah: Afraid of the Dark on Netflix. Trevor Noah is one of my favorite humans. When he took over for Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, I was like ” one is as good as Jon Stewart.” Enter Trevor Noah. The guy is hilarious,  highly intelligent, good looking, and I love his South African accent. I figured he was some polished sophisticated guy. And he is. Now. He grew up in South Africa and was born during apartheid. Apartheid is extreme racial segregation. In short, it was illegal for people to “have relations” with someone of a different race. His mother was African and his father is Swiss. So, he is literally a crime. His book Born a Crime is amazing.  During part of the book, he wrote about how his mom would have to lie and say she was babysitting him if they were confronted by the police. He grew up very poor and not fitting in with any particular group or race. I figured the book would be more about the story how he got to where he is today, but it was more about his childhood. I hope he writes a second book. Seriously, this is so interesting. If you like autobiographies, read this book. Then go watch his Netflix specials. Also, watch Jerry Seinfeld interview him on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

I know I talked about this book before, but if you want another interesting book, read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn HugoA friend recommended it to me and it was nothing like I expected. It’s the story of a movie star and her seven husbands, but it’s so much more than that. I can’t say too much without giving it away, so just go buy the book and read it.

I started reading the book People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Competitive Crafters, Drop-Off Despots, and Other Suburban Scourges by Jen Mann. I haven’t gotten very far but it’s hilarious. Like, laugh out loud funny. It’s probably funny to me because I don’t craft or do any of that stuff. It’s just not my thing. If it’s yours, that’s fantastic, but please don’t ask me to craft with you. I’m much better at just hanging out and watching you get your craft on. I’ll even bring the snacks…which will probably be store bought. Remember that scene in Bad Moms where Mila Kunis’s character walks into the school bake sale and throws down a box of donut holes and the Super Moms freak out? That would be me. Mila Kunis’s character. Not the Super Mom. Or, to be more accurate, the Super Stepmom.

My husband keeps telling me I should write a book. I’m not sure what it would be about. I tend to like books that are just essays about funny things that happen in life. So maybe I should get on that. Wonder if anyone would read it.

Ok, I should go start on the stuff I want to do today. Have a Happy and safe 4th of July!
